Sometimes a tooth requires a little more treatment than a regular filling. In some cases, either decay involves the majority of the tooth’s surfaces, or possibly the tooth has already broken, involving too much surface area to hold a filling–even one bonded into place (composite filling).

In such situations, it may be recommended that a porcelain crown be fabricated for the tooth, to better protect it against fracture, or even loss of the tooth. A crown covers the tooth entirely–it fits over the tooth, the same way a thimble fits over your thumb. A bridge is a replacement option for a missing tooth, three crowns in one piece, with the tooth in the middle being the missing tooth (or teeth).

Not so long ago, patients who had porcelain crowns would endure two appointments, often spaced 2-3 weeks apart. During those weeks, a temporary crown would be worn. Temporaries weren’t the end of the world, but they’re just that: TEMPORARY. Anything that gets put on temporarily CAN come off whenever they want to (you know…usually when you’re at a special event or dinner…or on vacation…or Christmas Eve).

Today, Dental Designs utilizes the best technology to proudly deliver Same Day Crowns, without needing temporaries! You can even watch your crown being milled! A short time later, the crown is polished, glazed, and finished before being cemented.

Porcelain Crowns

A porcelain crown, often referred to as a “cap,” covers a tooth, to restore its shape and size, increase its strength, and improve the overall appearance of the tooth. Porcelain gives the crown a natural, tooth-like appearance, unlike old metal crowns, or even porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns. If you’ve ever noticed someone’s smile with a dark line or haze at the gumline, you may have been seeing a metal-based crown.

The porcelain crowns fabricated at Dental Designs are most often done without metal underlayment (some situations require metal). With the use of the latest, cutting-edge technology, our capable doctors can prepare, scan, design, mill, polish, and glaze your final porcelain crown, right here, most times in one visit! WONDERFUL!!!!!
