The DeLight laser removes cavities and treats gum and tissue problems with the energy of light. The specialized light produced by this laser is selectively absorbed by the water content of cavities and tissues. In the case of treating a cavity, the laser gently removes the decay, leaving more of your healthy tooth intact.
How is the DeLight laser different than the drill?
The drill is a very powerful tool, and the vibration and the large hole it produces cause internal micro-fractures and discomfort. Anesthesia is almost always needed. The DeLight laser is an alternative that offers the patient the latest in technological advances. The laser light works to destroy and remove the decay without the uncomfortable vibration and resulting discomfort. Rather than a drilling sound, you hear only a gentle tapping. Unless the cavity is deeper than usual, most cases can be treated without anesthetic.

Will I still need anesthesia?
Probably not! In clinical studies, 96% of patients required no anesthesia when the DELight laser was used to remove decay. This means you will not have to spend time waiting for numbing to take effect or to wear off. In some cases we use short-acting anesthetics, especially in your first appointments depending on the lesion and the levels of anxiety, or if the area affected is rather deep. Additionally, multiple teeth in different parts of your mouth can be worked on in ONE visit. Upon evaluation of your particular needs, Dr. Padilla can provide you with various options of anesthesia or sedation to make your experience more comfortable. You may still choose to have anesthesia while avoiding the sound and vibration of the drill.
